What is crabgrass?

One of the most common weeds that grow on lawns across the word is crabgrass. Ah what a nightmare! The seed of crabgrass generally germinates at the time when the soil of your lawn has warmed up quite well. This would mean around the time of mid or late spring to the early time of the summer season. The temperature of the soil will be around 55 to 66 degrees for at least a week for the crabgrass to sprout. While during the warmer regions it can sprout as early as in the month of February.

Crabgrass is not good for our lawns as it weakens the turf around which it grows with its root toxins and covers up the grass within a circular patch. Crabgrass usually grows annually and it will only grow during the on season and it dies off as soon as the season has dropped off. Its seeds spread and sprout during the spring season and can really be a pain to homeowners. Crabgrass totally disappears during the winter season or when the lawn is hit by frost.

The easiest way to stop crabgrass growing within your lawn is to use an organic chemical that will stop it spread. Read more to find out how we can help. Below are some of the things that can help in stopping crabgrass growing with your lawn.

  • Mowing your lawn a bit higher rather than too short so direct sunlight doesn’t reach the soil making it warmer. This creates the perfect atmosphere for crabgrass to grow.
  • Never scalp the edges of the lawn that are along the sidewalks, beds and driveways.
  • Always water your lawn just before the crabgrass season starts off.
  • For patches where there is less grass throw some seed down and get that grass growing!

Another way to stop crabgrass from growing on your property is by improving the quality of your soil. Remember that crabgrass will grow on your property if the soil is dry or over watered or if there are salt or other kinds of toxins. One way to stop that from happening is to mix your soil with compost, organic fertilizer or any other kinds of additives that will help creating a healthier soil. You can also mix up some liquid lime into your soil as that helps in the pH and will help in improving the nutrients of the your grass, making it much healthier. Crabgrass can be a real pain but we hope you follow these tips and prevent it from ever happening!
